Music and movies allow us to experience different cultures even before we travel to new destinations. I have created curated lists of popular songs and films related to each destination that I take UF students to on a summer traveling study experience called Cities in Civilization. We spend almost a week in each of six major cities (London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Florence, Rome) seeking to understand the role each city has played in contributing to innovations in culture and technology. We consider the culture of each destination from dual perspectives of a deeper understanding of local life, and also the broad imprint that each place has made on global culture. my summer. I have also provided lists for Florida, where (most of) the students and I are from, to provide some context for how we ourselves look to outsiders.
The lists below include more than 100 songs and 70 films and television series. The song lists include videos as well as links to the corresponding Spotify playlists.
